At least nine Katakwi youths, including a senior four (S4) candidate of , Toroma Seed SS, primary school learners, and other youth, have been arrested in connection with the suspected murder of a 19-year-old Katakwi teenager.

The deceased was identified as George William Opolot, son of Opedo and a resident of Aleles, Aleles Parish, Akurao, Toroma Subcounty.

In another incident on the same day, Francis Ongiroi, a resident of Oidotongor village, Osuguro Parish, Kapujan sub-county, was killed by a mob for alleged theft while attempting to flee an integration meeting.

It is worth noting that on Saturday morning, the community of Akurao Parish in Toroma Subcounty awoke to shocking news following the murder of one of their own during the night of Independence Day celebrations in Jamaica's main trading center in Akurao Toroma.

John Bosco Orani, LCIII chairperson of Toroma subcounty, explained that on the night of independence, two groups of youths from Olupe Parish and Akurao Parish met at a common center known as Main Jamaica, where they disagreed on who should take the two girls, only identified as Ester and Alaso, who were present that night.

This caused a fight between the two groups, which led to the death of someone who is believed not even to be involved in the scuffle but was present at the time of the fight, Orani explained.

Orani stressed that the incidents are now repeatedly happening in his area, where he blamed the act of drug abuse and overconsumption of alcohol by youth, urging parents to take good care of their children and keep advising them or even punishing them if they go astray.

Geofrey Omolo, the LC V chairperson of the Katakwi district, blamed the backward act of youth on poor parenting; however, he urged parents to awaken the role of proper parenting but also restrain their children from uninvited functions.
