Farmers in the Katakwi and Teso sub-regions have been urged to embrace poultry as a means of improving household incomes, reducing poverty, and ending reliance on land crop farming due to sharp failure in crop production as a result of unpredicted weather patterns that resulted in poor harvests in the two seasons.

Dr. Onyait Ariko, District Production Officer, Katakwi District Local Government, made the call today after sharing his expertise with media in the district. He stated that the region's heavy reliance on food crops for both household and commercial purposes has limited opportunities for farmers to build sustainable sources of income.

He stated that in Teso, where agriculture remains central to household livelihoods, increased investment in commercial farming and farmer cooperatives could provide farmers with additional income opportunities and access to financial services.

According to Ariko Poultry, particularly Sazo, cruisers, layers, and rainbow roosters' chicken, they can help even low-income families and can also serve as a form of productive investment that can improve farmers' ability to access special family needs.

Dr. Ariko technically advised that once a farmer shifts towards poultry keeping, he said, a farmer could help farmers expand their sources of income while reducing overdependence on seasonal food-crop production that fails during harsh weather patterns.

He underscored the need for proper arrangements where a farmer can potentially put better practical management practices, especially disease control, especially new castle local known as Ecoro disease, a farmer can rip big, noting that chicken is readily needed in the market, citing that in one hen a farmer can get between Ugx 20,000 and 25,000, while a rooster can be sold in between Ugx 25,000 and 30,000.
